Things Fall Apart

(Novemberish, 2005)

i peek throughthe jagged edges of my hair
at the pavement below
while behind me
a building is collapsing

Things fall apart.

Things. Fall. Apart.

the river is slick
with pollution
as the yellow Hummer
rumbles by
farting smog and
giving not a thought

still
i refuse to litter

Things fall apart.

Things. Fall. Apart.

bare winter branches
glare against the sky
in outright defiance
of the daffodils blooming
on the hill

Things fall apart.

somewhere a tree is crashing
through a roof built
where a roof has no business being
but someday its crumbling pieces
will feed a garden

Things fall apart.
They fall apart because they must.
This inevitable cycle
of life and death
goes on.

Winter frost brings
the Spring growth
and the Summer corn.

and you and me
doesn’t matter so much
anymore
because
this inevitable cycle
of Birth and Death
goes on.

Yes
Things fall apart.
Things. Fall. Apart.

But they come together
and bring something better,
too.
